The Glucose Revolution: Losing Weight (Pocket Guide) Interesting findings but repetitive presentation – –
The book definitely offers interesting new insights in findings about metabolic activities.
One important new idea is the GI factor: Rather than dividing food into categories of simple and complex carbohydrates (which is/was the wide-spread method), it introduces the GI factor as being responsible for the properties of food. The authors highlight that it is pointless to refer to complexity of carbs as a way of predicting their effects in the body.
The book addresses sports people, diabetics, patients with a heart condition as well as people trying to lose weight.
It moreover counteracts the sweeping assumption that carbohydrates are generally fattening.
The scientific research is presented in an understandable way making the book easy to read. It offers suggestions for recipes, and explains how to exploit metabolic properties of food.
A big drawback, however, is the frequent repetition of the same facts and findings and the perpetual references to the same examples. Not only does this “chewy” style create a certain boredom, it might even -mistakenly- provoke the idea that the authors cannot provide other facts to support their theories. What a pity!
Otherwise, the book is a convincing -though partly sluggishly written- approach to the controversial subject “metabolism”, and might offer new incentives for those who are disappointed by fad diets or by so-called “sports nutrition”. Even guide lines for the alleviation of ailments such as diabetes or heart diseases are given and (as I am neither diabetic nor a cardiac patient I can’t report on own experiences) they do sound convincing.
All in all: Good contents, interesting subject, but the presentation leaves a great deal to be desired.
: Over 50 per cent of people in the UK are overweight and/or obese. This is largely due to the fact that too many people like their food to be fast and fatty. Unlike other guides dealing with weight loss, The Pocket Guide to the Glucose Revolution and losing weight doesn’t concentrate on calorie reduction, but actually offers advice on how to increase your food intake: “You can eat quantity, just consider the quality”.
Using the glycaemic index (or G.I. factor – a simple ranking of foods based on their immediate effect on blood sugar level), the book lists foods that fill you up, without fattening, and keep you satisfied for longer.
But the authors insist this isn’t just another diet book. Instead, The Pocket Guide to the Glucose Revolution and losing weight offers no-nonsense nutritional advice and analysis designed to help you control your appetite by being choosy about what carbohydrates you eat. The message, it seems, is you don’t have to starve to lose weight. Or rather, “release” weight. “After all, to lose something, suggests that you hope to find it again someday.”–Christopher Kelly
